This ended up being such a beautiful slither of what it looks and sounds like to be an artist today. An honest one. Put together, it felt quite significant. There are exponentially so many more artists than there are famous people -- and it is often mind-numbingly boring listening to what famous people have to say. [and when I am bored to tears in those moments I am reminded that the fame reward system is often more about appeasement and numbing the masses than innovation -- but that's a conversation to be had when I am extended the honor of being on this excellent voicememo-video-mashup-podcast Backatcha] Listening to an actual conversation (well a juxtaposition of voicenotes in the imitation of conversation) in which artists are sharing glimpses of their thoughts and takes and motives felt profound.
"'Writing is dead! Writing is dead!'--No! Publishing is dead! Writers will always go on, but we need communities, we need to stop isolating ourselves, and that will be hard considering how much competition we are in with each other... but we can exist in competition with each other; we can exist in conflict with each other as long as we are not denying each other the basic foundation of our humanity." -@Zani D, from the end of her portion of the podcast.
I loved your breakdown of Tierra Whack's video + how you see art + how you extend that to getting kids to connect to their inner artists -- it helped me understand the idea of what art is in a new way
You did a fantastic fuckin' job of stitching my shit together from the groggy mess I gave you!
The entire listen was fantastic, all the way through with my morning coffee. Everyone you featured is too goddamn talented and interesting to not listen to. Thanks for not making me sound as insane and discursive as I actually am. And for cutting out me chewing up pills.
This is deserving of all ears. The diversity of voices and perspectives. Sandolore's thought's on art (which I think run concurrent to mine). Magnetic's thoughts on anything (fuck, I just wanted to hear the voice behind the words if nothing else, amazing to hear a true young voice that authentic in this landscape, fuck), Peter's points on publishing (*screeching noises*) Chandra (Resilience and Love. Goddamn. This whole piece really.), who I will NOW pay close attention to, shit. The flat media landscape (co-signed). This is ONE podcast I'd actually listen to even if I wasn't on it. These are all working artists or creatives of one kind or another and I'm interested in all of them. Most of us have day jobs or hustles that are not our writing. I liked your intro. I'm still mulling the whole thing and I should probably give it another listen. (I'm giving it another listen, in pieces, minus myself. Fuck my voice and what I said, whatever it was.)
That movie, Life, horribly underrated! Amazing fucking movie.
Fuck in the morning my vocal fry mixes with a near Appalachian drawl (thanks for pointing the accent out Zani, now I can't unhear that shit). I feel like a hobo sitting in the middle of a bunch of much more insightful and talented people here. Thank you for including me AT ALL, given what you ended up producing.
This needs to be promoted even outside of this substack space! Not sure if the folks here will really appreciate the creativity of this. Excited to see where this goes!
this first one is unique to how i want to do the following ones but stick it through and I think you will enjoy it. can't wait to do further ones with you!
Do you have fun ideas for commercial breaks? Usually that’s when I’ll take a break with a podcast . . . Just thinking about how you could indicate ideal points for breaks. I love the format. It’s great stuff.
4:18 - Yes, it takes some time to settle into the vulnerability required by fiction, bit I too am happier for it. Good points on the “why fiction” question.
Andrew, you and I have a couple things in common. Viewing life as art. I’ve always viewed myself as artist first and becoming a firefighter and paramedic as an expression of certain God-given attributes. And the movie Life is in my top 3 favorite movies ever. Big Fish in my top 5 🙌🏻
I’m still working my way through this, but damn, it’s fascinating to hear people’s voices matched to their thoughts. I think hearing someone speak, paying attention to their patterns and intonations give further depth to what they’re talking about.

i thought that was such a powerful capstone to your earlier point, both of you echoing the same thing from two sides of the podcast.
I am so excited about this.

That’s a huge compliment!

9:52 - @Sandolore Sykes “Substack taught me to accept where I am” - also very insightful.
yep i too loved that answer
36:20 - Solid, solid points here too @Andrew Robert Colom. A “flat” media landscape . . . You made me think about that. Very interesting.
Thanks so much for listening!

ill have to think about it. I might do commercial breaks where i advertise my movie and other substack newsletters in humorous ways.

Some of the best and most inspiring art are people the world will never know. Thank you for your attention and your art both on and off the canvas.
